despite outward appearances

Despite outward appearances that lure us into believing otherwise, we are not what we think we are. We live the life of a character – thinking we are just that character – until we recognize that we are the screen upon which an entire movie unfolds. The movie includes (and the screen allows, of course) the character that we think we are – from birth to death – and after we recognize the truth of who we really are, we continue to play our role. But we no longer believe the role is exclusively who we are; we know it’s just a role in a movie and that we are the immortal screen upon which all movies play, as well as every character that appears on that screen … forever.
